The merged fact table combines facts from one or more stars, storing them at their lowest level of compatibility. The resulting star can be used to perform cross-process analysis, without the need to perform the multi-step drill-across process described in 4. For this reason, the merged fact table may also be referred to as a drill-across fact table or consolidated fact table. A common use of the merged fact table supports the comparison of plans or goals to actual performance. Plans and actual results are normally recorded in separate stars; comparing them requires drilling across. Rather than perform this operation at runtime, you can have them done ahead of time. The precomputed results are stored in a merged fact table. Figure 14-1 depicts an example. In the top of the diagram, first-level stars capture information about order targets (sales_goal_facts) and actuals (order_facts). Sales goals are established for each territory and month, and may be revised or restated in one or more plan versions. Orders are captured by day, product, customer, and salesperson. The stars conform at the month level (a conformed rollup of day) and territory level (a conformed rollup of salesrep).

Unfortunately, this solution does not prevent another developer from using some other tool to change a database object directly in the database. Typically, resources in an application are protected via a combination of authentication and authorization constraints. Specifying authentication constraints without authorization constraints (and vice versa) does not add any value and therefore does not make sense. If the container cannot determine the caller s identity, it uses the <login-config> element specified in the application deployment descriptor. The following code listing example is an excerpt from an application deployment descriptor. It contains the authentication entries required to enforce the constraint using FORM-based authentication. Note that the associated authorization constraints, specified within the web-resource-collection element, are covered in detail in the section Authorization found later in this chapter.

Without a merged fact table, comparing goal dollars and order dollars would require drilling across the conformed dimensions. The two-step process for drilling across these two stars was illustrated in Figure 5-4. First, each star is queried, aggregating the fact to a common level of dimensional detail. Second, the result sets from the two queries are merged together through a full outer join. The merged fact table goal_vs_performance_facts precomputes the drill-across comparison. Shown in the bottom of Figure 14-1, it summarizes order_dollars and goal_dollars at a common level of dimensional detail: month and territory. Notice it contains one additional dimension: plan_version. Its presence will be explained shortly.
