A solution available to some Web sites to avoid the whole privacy issue and not request any PII on your Web site at all is to rely solely on anonymous collaborative filtering. Unfortunately, this approach is really not that feasible for most sites and is not possible for personalized e-commerce sites in which name, address, and credit card number information is frequently required to purchase something. So, what if you are one of the majority of sites on the Internet for which using only anonymous collaborative filtering is not an option Are you out of luck and forced into the privacy fray Yes, I'm afraid so. If your Web site uses its PII for its intended purpose that is, to provide individualized content to match users' interests and if you can guarantee that the content will never leave your control, you should have no privacy issues.
